Blog 17: Fourth Interview

Interview 4:
  1. How important is gait alignment, in helping a child to walk?
  2. How does the therapist go about the rehabilitation? Is it one therapist that sticks with a patient, or multiple?
  3. What effect does it have on the child if they see a different therapist every time?
  4. How do the children generally respond to the horse?
  5. How important is it for the kids to have the same horse? How many care?
  6. What is the habilitation process usually like, for the kids?
  7. How many patients require multiple therapies, like Speech and Physical therapies together?
  8. How do the volunteers help, aside from the assigned sidewalking duties?
  9. Is it important to have the same volunteers for the kids? Do certain children make friends with the sidewalkers?
  10. How do the toys help the different children?
  11. How else do the horses themselves help the children, emotionally speaking?
  12. How do you keep the children engaged? (Aside from things previously mentioned)
  13. What happens when a child cannot keep on-task?
  14. What happens when a child reacts badly to the horse?
  15. What happens when a horse reacts badly to the child?
  16. How do the parents react when their child has to be removed from a session, early?
  17. Do some children only attend the riding sessions? How do they fare, compared to children who work in the clinic as well?
  18. What is the parent’s general opinion of the ranch, and the work done there?
  19. I’ve seen a patient who had an ABA come in place of a sidewalker. How much does Hippotherapy help him, in relation to his outside therapy?
  20. What happens when kids don’t continue their therapy at home? Have you seen a case like that?

1. What has your experience been like at Leaps and Bounds?
2. How do you view Hippotherapy, compared to other physical therapy treatments?
3. Do you ever see adults that have cerebral palsy, or similar conditions? (Yes -> How is their treatment different from the children's? No -> Why is that?)
4. Did your education prepare you to work at Leaps and Bounds? If so, how?
5. What do you think is the most important part of what you do, here?
6. How important is the work volunteers do, around the ranch? (Why?)
7. Where would be the best place to find more information on Hippotherapy?
8. How is Cerebral Palsy different from other conditions you see, working at L&B?
9. What other conditions do you see, and how do you treat them?
10. How would you go about teaching someone about Hippotherapy?

  1. How can Hippotherapy best help a child with a developmental disorder reach a normal walking pattern?
  2. What is the most common developmental disorder you see? What about the rest?
  3. How do you typically help [most common disorder] patients?
  4. How do you typically help the other patients?
  5. How essential are the volunteers to the process, at Leaps and Bounds?
  6. Are there rarer cases you have to treat differently? (How?)
  7. How different is Therapeutic Riding from Hippotherapy?
  8. What kind of patients go in for TR that don’t go for PT, OT, or ST?
  9. Out of Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapies, which do you think is most effective with Hippotherapy?
  10. Why isn’t Hippotherapy more widely-used?

1) My mentor is Dr. Cassandra Sanders-Holly, and she works at Leaps and Bounds Pediatric Therapy, along with her job as a professor at USC.
2) Working interview questions:
  • Where did you go to high school, and how did that prepare you for college?
  • Where did you go to college, and what all did you study?
  • Did you come into the practice of physical therapy with Hippotherapy in mind?
  • How did you learn about Hippotherapy?
  • What sort of problems did you face, running Leaps and Bounds from the start?
